In the European context, Galicia stands out for its own culture and its Atlantic character. The southern area is the most modern, populated and industrialised part of this country and, therefore, the driving force of its economy. |

| The more than 25,000 members of the university community lead their academic lives in the University’s three campuses in the cities of Ourense, Pontevedra and Vigo. The University City in Vigo was originally inspired by North American universities. In the campus, there are colleges and administrative buildings together with halls of residence and sports, science and leisure facilities, which contribute to a richer university life. The swimming pool, the gym and the leisure centre are some of the services that make possible a full enjoyment of this campus, which is located away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but easily accessible. Yet some colleges are still located in the city centre. In contrast to this model, Ourense has a peculiar urban campus, in which a footbridge connects the old part to the new area of faculties and sports and accommodation facilities. There are university and private residence halls at the students’ disposal in the city. The campus in Pontevedra lies by the River Lérez and the so-called Island of Sculptures, and forms a newly-built architectural ensemble. Nature, sports, and, especially, culture are distinguishing aspects of university life in Pontevedra. Nowadays, students have a subsidised private residence hall at their disposal in Pontevedra. From 2008 on, they will also have the chance to lodge in apartments exclusively built for this purpose. |
